Shakira

'Gypsy' video features tennis star Rafael Nadal

International pop star Shakira co-stars with Spanish tennis pro Rafael Nadal in the just-released video for "Gypsy," the latest single from her "She Wolf" album.

Nadal plays Shakira's love interest in the clip, which was shot in Barcelona, Spain by Shakira's longtime collaborator Jaume De Laiguana.

"Shooting this video with Rafa was a great experience, he is very sweet and made it easy and fun," Shakira said in a press release. "He and I have so much in common--starting out so young in our respective careers and traveling the world--I felt this would translate the spirit of the lyrics in the song and I was thrilled he wanted to be a part of it."

Richard Thompson

Thirteen new songs being recorded on West Coast tour

On a warm-up date for a quick West Coast tour, legendary British songwriter/guitarist Richard Thompson unleashed Thursday (2/11) the 13 new songs being considered for his next album, which is expected to be a live disc. Mostly an electric band affair, Thompson leans heavy on non-fiction in the new batch, singing about Wall Street mayhem, the craziness of the Burning Man festival and an unidentified pretentious man from Newcastle, England.

Death, a subject Thompson has delved into with considerable insight over the last 40 years, returns in three tunes. One is a requiem for three recently deceased friends, among them the folk guitarist Davy Graham. "Crime Scene," an acoustic tune, is set at the scene of a murder, the description being physical and speculative. It resolves with Thompson's typical maudlin approach: "Darkness wins the day/a soul is torn away." The third piece in the trilogy concerns a fictional serial killer named Sidney Wells.

Thompson has not shied away from love songs--"hold me up when I'm lost in confusion" and "this time I'll promise I'll do better" are refrains on two songs--nor intricate guitar solos.

The band includes a saxophonist, Peter Zorn, an instrument employed by Thompson only for a short while in the early 1990s. Zorn plays everything from flute up to baritone sax, giving Thompson's tunes folk airs and classic rock heft ("I'm Bad Again").

Thompson will be performing theses show, divided into a set of new tunes and a set of old favorites, through Feb. 25.

Gillian Welch

Folkie unveils new tunes in guitarist's revue

Gillian Welch and her guitarist Dave Rawlings swap roles on the current Dave Rawlings Machine tour that features three members of the Old Crow Medicine Show. In the midst of originals and numbers from the pens of Woody Guthrie, Neil Young and Bill Monroe, Welch is using the opportunity to perform a song or two from her upcoming album. Welch has not released an album in seven years.

Rawlings and Welch draw inspiration from the folk music and blues that inspired Bob Dylan and his generation of folkies. Their originals are more rough-and-tumble than the revivalists of the 1960s and a rambunctious spirit fills their versions of "This Land is Your Land," "See See Rider" and a few blues numbers that do not appear on Rawlings' debut album, "A Friend of a Friend."

The tour, which included stops in Los Angeles at Amoeba Records and the Troubadour on Thursday (2/4), continues though Feb. 16 up the West Coast and includes stops at Amoeba Records in San Francisco and Music Millennium in Portland, OR. Rawlings and Welch intend to keep independent record stores on their tours as a thank you for their support on their previous releases.

Caetano Veloso

Full tour, album expected after California shows

Legendary Brazilian singer/songwriter Caetano Veloso has announced two US bookings--the San Francisco Jazz festival and the 5,700-seat Greek Theatre in Los Angeles--but those are expected to be the start of a larger stateside tour in April and possibly May.

The 67-year-old Veloso, championed by the likes of Beck and David Byrne, ventures to the US only about once every three years or so. It was not until 1999 that he made his first full US tour.

His records consistently have significant gaps between their release in Brazil and the US, partly owing to him recording for Universal in South America, which then licenses the albums to Warner Music's Nonesuch label. His latest, "Zii e Zie," was released in April 2009 in Brazil and other countries; Nonesuch has yet to set a release date.

Paul Simon

Bonnaroo goes viral with lineup announcement

Paul Simon will be among the headliners at this year's Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, and speculation is rampant that another Paul with a significant legacy will be on the bill as well.

Whether McCartney is indeed booked will be unveiled with the rest of the lineup for this year's Bonnaroo, which will be announced throughout the day on Feb. 9. Tickets go on sale that day at 9 a.m. PST/noon EST.

Rather than announce the acts that will play the June 10-13 festival in Manchester, TN, promoters Superfly Productions and AC Entertainment will unveil performers throughout the day online. The goal is to generate conversations about the lineup a few acts at a time.

Simon's only other scheduled performances are Feb. 16 as a guest at the Plastic Ono Band performance in Brooklyn, NY, and with old friend Art Garfunkel on April 24 at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.
